Limit

Mert Yalniz conducted the world premiere of Limit, his first composition for orchestra, with the Colburn Orchestra at UCLA's Royce Hall, leading the performance from memory. Inspired by scientific questions about the limits of our planet and the universe, the eleven-minute work was praised by Richard S. Ginell in San Francisco Classical Voice as an "all-encompassing series of episodes with striking instrumental colors."

Ginell described the 22-year-old German-Turkish composer, conductor and pianist as a remarkable discovery, highlighting the work's bold contrasts, playful energy and exuberant finale. He also noted that one listener predicted a career in Hollywood, while suggesting that, with Esa-Pekka Salonen as his mentor and role model, Yalniz is likely to write many more works for the concert hall.

Ojai Music Festival

At the 80th Ojai Music Festival, Mert Yalniz conducted Witold Lutosławski's Grave: Metamorphoses for Cello and Strings with cellist Jay Campbell and the Colburn Orchestra, in a concert shared with festival music director Esa-Pekka Salonen. Reviewing the performance in San Francisco Classical Voice, Richard S. Ginell described Yalniz as a "formidably talented composer-conductor" and noted the intensity and expressive conducting he brought to Lutosławski's tense score.
